Bible Study: Isaiah
An 8 week study, led by Rev. David Miers, began on Sunday, April 7, 2013. This group meets each Sunday evening from 5:30-7pm in the WGCC Library. The final meeting will be on Sunday, May 26, 2013.

The book of Isaiah is, by far, the most often cited Old Testament book in the writings of the New Testament. Join with others in studying and discerning the content and context of this important work in the canon of the Judeo-Christian faith and culture. The group will meet to examine the history, geography, and theological development of the Middle East in the 8th century to learn more about Isaiah, his life and times, and his following that might help us understand why this biblical text is so popular.

*Sunday evening sessions

This Bible Study series was taught by Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore. It began on Sunday Sept. 9, 2012 and ended on Sunday Nov. 11, 2012.

Issues of sex, homosexuality and gender identity surround us in the news and media. President Obama makes a statement in support of gay marriage. Barney Frank marries his long time partner. A political figure sends out inappropriate photos of a sexual nature. A trans gender woman wants to participate in a beauty pageant. A young gay college student commits suicide after his roommate video tapes him with another man. We’ve all read or heard many of the stories.

There are a myriad of feelings, emotions, thoughts and opinions around these issues every time we hear or see news like this. Do you have conflicting thoughts when it comes to what you have traditionally understood the Bible to say about such things? Can you ignore these issues because you think this kind of situation won’t ever touch your life? Do you sympathize or support the LGBT community but don’t know exactly how to express that? Do you wrestle with these questions in light of Jesus’ teachings of Christian love, acceptance and kindness?

Dr. Moore will lead a thorough, open and inclusive study and discussion of the Bible concerning sex and homosexuality. All sessions will look at biblical texts, the Hebrew and Greek, histories of translation and interpretation, and present opportunities for questions and discussion. Video excerpts will be used to augment the discussion.

If you want to know more about what the Bible says and means when it comes to the subjects of sex and homosexuality, then this is a wonderful opportunity. Come to one session or come to all.

The individual sessions will be as follows:
Week 1- In the beginning:  Sexuality and our created nature.
Week 2- The Holiness Codes: sex, food, and cleanliness in ancient Israel.
Week 3- Sex and respect: What happened at Sodom?
Week 4 - Marriage in the Old and New Testaments.
Week 5 - Jesus and Sexuality.
Week 6 and 7 - What did Paul write about same sex relationships?
Week 8 - Does Jude say anything about homoerotic acts?
Week 9 - How careless biblical interpretation harms communities.
Week 10 - Constructing an ethic of grace.

Suitable for children 16 and over.
Please join us. LGBT community welcome.
